Type Specimen

Illustrator + Photoshop

Project Brief

Design an accordion-style type specimen book that showcases the versatility, character, and functionality of a chosen typeface. The project will serve as both an informative and experimental exploration of the typeface’s aesthetic and practical applications.

Introduction

For this project, I created a type specimen book showcasing Mrs Eaves, a refined yet rebellious typeface designed by Zuzana Licko in 1996. Known for its elegant serifs, low x-height, and sophisticated yet slightly quirky character, Mrs Eaves is a modern revival of Baskerville—one of the most iconic typefaces in history. Its name pays homage to Sarah Eaves, John Baskerville’s housekeeper-turned-wife, adding a layer of intrigue to its already rich history.

Mrs Eaves - She's A Killer Queen

The Royale Match

To bring the personality of Mrs Eaves to life, I paired it with "Killer Queen" by Queen, a song that exudes the same blend of sophistication and playfulness. Just as Freddie Mercury’s lyrics weave a tale of a high-class femme fatale with a mischievous edge, Mrs Eaves carries a delicate yet unconventional presence. Its refined letterforms nod to luxury and tradition, while its subtly exaggerated curves and tight spacing introduce a hint of defiance—perfectly mirroring the song’s fusion of elegance and rock-and-roll flair.

Every element in my type specimen book was illustrated exclusively using Mrs Eaves, pushing the typeface beyond simple text and into visual storytelling. From typographic compositions echoing Mercury’s dynamic vocal delivery to intricate layouts that reflect the song’s theatricality, the book captures the essence of "Killer Queen" through type alone. This approach not only highlights the typeface’s versatility but also underscores its ability to carry both grace and boldness—just like the song itself.

IMAGE BUILDING

A portrait of Freddie Mercury wearing a crown and a gun were created using Symbols, Letters, and Glyphs.

COLOR PALETTE

I chose a purple, black, and white palette to match the balance of elegance and boldness in both Mrs Eaves and Killer Queen. Purple, tied to royalty and luxury, reflects the typeface’s refined side, while black adds strength and edge. White keeps everything clean and readable. Together, the colors make the design bolder and capture the mix of sophistication and flair that defines both the typeface and the song.
